Baroness Scotland's cleaner jailed
THE illegal immigrant who tricked Baroness Scotland into hiring her as a cleaner was jailed for eight months yesterday.
Loloahi Tapui, 27, showed no emotion as she was sentenced at the Old Bailey.
The judge told her that Lady Scotland, the former Attorney General, had been “terribly let down” by the deception.
Tapui, who had overstayed her student visa by four years, worked as a housekeeper for £6 an hour. The Tongan, who was found guilty of fraud last month, was ordered to pay £1,600 prosecution costs. Tapui, who knew she should have left the UK in February 2005, told a series of barefaced lies, the court heard.
Lady Scotland, 54, who was fined £5,000 for failing to take copies of the documents Tapui claimed showed she was entitled to work in the UK, has said she “bitterly regrets” her mistake.
Judge Nicholas Loraine-Smith told Tapui he would make no recommendation on deportation because the Home Office was already considering her fate.
