Americans have been posting hilarious reviews on TikTok of their experiences at Britain’s budget chain pubs.
Owned by Tim Martin, Wetherspoons is notorious throughout Britain for its cheap menus and uninspiring decor - a bit of a contrast to what Americans might perceive to be the classic British pub.
You generally find a real range of characters in these little taverns, often not the Hugh Grant stereotype which some Americans think all British people are.
One American, Kristen, posted on the video-sharing app her thoughts on her recent Wetherspoons visit, with the caption simply reading ‘overhyped’.

The video started in hilarious fashion: “Hey y’all, so ever since I’ve been to the UK, everyone’s told me to try Wetherspoons, and I finally did. And honestly… not a fan”.
Kirsten continued: “There’s this huge hype around it and I expected it to be really good, but it just wasn’t there for me.
Here comes the brutal put down: “Like, yes it’s cheap and cheerful, yes we love that… but it was almost too cheap.”
Kirsten isn’t wrong about the cheapness - a traditional breakfast tends to be less than a fiver, while you can sometimes get a pint for as little as 99p - depending on where you are in the country.
The Tiktoker then made an amusing remark about the layout of the pubs, adding: “Don’t get me started on the stairs… I literally had to walk a mountain of stairs to get to the bathroom, and when you’re drunk, you don’t really want to go up and down a bunch of stairs”.

Kirsten capped off her list of heartbreaking first-world problems by concluding that “it just didn’t live up to the hype”. To avoid any drama though, she did precede the statement by saying “no hate to the other Spoons…”
Americans are no stranger to acting weirdly in a Spoons though. Alex Williams works at the Moon on the Hill in Sutton, South London and explained how an American needlessly tipped him a one dollar bill for pouring his pint.
After asking to tip via the card, Alex told him it wasn’t possible. Nevertheless, the American, who had “some thick accent” stuffed the 1 dollar (worth 82p) into his hand.
“It was completely useless seeing as I've never been to America and have no plans to go. Maybe it will tempt me to go, now I know my first holiday there will be one dollar cheaper!”
