The pretty little town named UK's 'most relaxing' despite the terrible weather
Lerwick in the Shetland Islands has been named among the UK's most relaxing towns just don't expect endless sunshine.
A pretty little town on an island off Scotland has been named one of Britain’s most relaxing places despite its awful weather.
Lerwick is the Shetland Islands’ only town and is 123 miles off the northeast coast of Scotland.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) personal well-being data from 2022 and 2023 showed that it was the third least stressed place in the country, with residents 39 percent less anxious than the national average.
On the high street there are restaurants and cafes to enjoy as well as independent shops and museums to explore.
There are also a number of sights and landmarks such as Broch of Clickimin, Fort Charlotte, the Lodberrie and the Knab Memorial Park.
The weather, however, is one of the town’s downsides. It has an average of 200 days of rainfall and 20 of frost a year.
It has an average temperature in winter of 6C with a minimum of 2C and an average in summer of 15C.
Lerwick is further north than Saint Petersburg in Russia. In the winter there are less than six hours of complete sunlight a day.
In the surrounding area are villages like Bressay and Noss as well as wildlife like seals, otters and orcas.
