The seaside town of Whitby is set to receive a massive £10m boost for a brand new maritime hub as part of an investment by the Government in the town’s future.
The proposed three-storey facility on the town's Endeavour Wharf will be home to spaces for start-ups, workshops, and laboratories.
What’s more, the hope is that the new Maritime Hub will blend in with the local area and still retain around 200 parking spaces for locals to take advantage of.

Speaking about the new centre, North Yorkshire Council’s chief executive Richard Flinton explained the planning permission submission was an “exciting step forward” for the project.
He added: “The Maritime Hub will open doors to new economic growth in Whitby and help provide a route for young people into the maritime and marine industries.”
While the Maritime Hub could bring prosperity to Whitby, there were some concerns about it being built on a floodplain.
However, according to the council, the lower ground floor units have been designed to allow water to enter with services raised off the ground by around one metre.
In a statement, the council explained: “Concerns about the hub being located on a floodplain have also been mitigated as the building will be designed to flood.
“In the event of a flood, the ground floor units will allow water to enter, and all services will be raised above one metre. After water levels drop, the units would be easily washed out."
On how the community has been involved in the planning of the centre North Yorkshire Council’s corporate director of community development Nic Harne claimed they had worked with all stakeholders on the plans.
He said: “We have listened to stakeholders and consultation feedback throughout the planning process before submitting this application.”

Mr Harne added: “We have received some suggestions that following Eskdale School’s merger with Caedmon College this summer, the school site would be a better location.
“But existing and potential future tenants of the wharf have stated they need direct access to the water and as such the school site would not be a suitable alternative.”
