Northampton fire: Town centre completely shut as huge plume of smoke seen for miles

Major routes in Northampton's town centre have been closed off with a 500m cordon erected to keep people away as crews battle the raging inferno.

Major building fire forces Northampton town centre to close

A town centre has been completely closed off as firefighters battle a massive fire. A huge plume of smoke can be seen for miles with major routes in and out of Northampton blocked off this morning.

Bridge Street, Angel Street, Derngate and Victoria Promenade have been shut with police advising locals to keep their doors and windows closed. 

A spokesperson for Northampton Fire and Rescue Service said: "Several major routes in and around Northampton town centre have been closed this morning due to a large-scale fire in Bridge Street.

"A 500-metre cordon has been put in place to allow fire crews to deal with the incident which has so far resulted in the closure of Bridge Street, Angel Street, Derngate and Victoria Promenade.

"Road users are asked to find alternative routes and to avoid this area until further notice. While residents and local businesses are advised to keep their doors and windows closed due to a large plume of smoke."

Bridge Street fire: What we know so far

A fire which occurred on Bridge Street in Northampton has been brought under control.

The fire broke out earlier today and a 500-metre cordon was put in place around the area.

Local residents and businesses were encouraged to keep their doors and windows shut. In a statement on X, Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue confirmed the fire was now "under control" and that they were in the "dampening down phase".

Bridge Street fire now under control

Northampton Fire and Rescue have confirmed that the fire is now "under control".

In a statement on X, they said: "The fire is under control and we are in the dampening down phase. There is still a cordon in place in the immediate area and there is likely to be some disruption for most of the day."

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue have issued an update on the status of the fire. 

Posting an update on X, they said: "We are still on site dealing with a fire in the town centre. A 500-metre cordon has been put in place while we deal with the incident. Road users are asked to please find alternative routes."

Earlier today they confirmed to the Express that seven pumps were attending the fire on Bridge Street.

The Northampton Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed they have seven pumps attending the fire.

Speaking to Express.co.uk they said that they were liaising with West Northamptonshire Council and apologised for the disruption caused.

Emergency services are dealing with an emergency fire which broke out on Bridge Street earlier today. 

A 500m cordon has been put in place around the scene.

Northants Police have confirmed there is no access via The Drapery, St Peter's Way, Gold Street, or Abington Street. 

Road users have been encouraged to find alternative routes whilst local residences and businesses have been urged to keep their doors and windows closed.

Northants Police have issued an update on a fire on Bridge Street. Writing on X, they said: "Due to a large-scale fire in Bridge Street, Northampton, in addition to Angel Street, Derngate and Victoria Promenade.

"There is no access via St Peter's Way, Gold Street, Abington Street or The Drapery."

Footage posted on X shows smoke billowing from the scene of the fire. Posted by @ShamishMonster, the user said: " Looked pretty bad, seen it from my hotel this morning…..all roads in out of the town now closed."
