A flight from Edinburgh to New York was forced to divert to London after it reportedly had a cracked windscreen.

The Delta flight DL209 took off from Edinburgh Airport and was heading for John F. Kennedy International Airport around 12.20pm on Sunday.

But it was diverted to London Heathrow and landed later that afternoon with the flight company saying the plane had experienced a "matinenance issue".

A spokesperson for Delta said: “Delta flight 209 travelling from Edinburgh to New York-Kennedy diverted to London-Heathrow on Sunday, June 2 after experiencing a potential maintenance issue during flight," reports The Herald.

It added: "The aircraft landed safely without incident.

"Customers have been re-accommodated and we apologise for the delay in their travel plans."

After the Delta Airlines flight left Edinburgh Airport it  flew over Ireland and towards America.

However it then had to make a sharp U-turn which Edinburgh Live reports was dut to a cracked windscreen.

The plane was diverted to London Heathrow. It landed there just before 4.30pm.

Passengers were then put on another flight to New York - this one from Heathrow at 11.30am the following day.

The decision to turn the plane was made at around 1.46pm which was just over an hour after departure.
