A teenage boy is fighting for his life after a Bank Holiday crash that left a major road closed for eight hours.

Emergency services, including the air ambulance, were called to the A1(M) in Cambridgeshire at around 4.30pm on Saturday after the crash, which involved a black Peugeot 107 and a white Ford Transit 350 Leader minibus.

The boy, who is 16 years old and was a front seat passenger in the Peugeot, was taken to Cambridge's Addenbrooke's Hospital, with police on Sunday describing his condition as "critical".

The car's driver, a 49-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries, as did seven occupants of the minibus.

The minibus driver, a 26-year-old man from South Yorkshire, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving and has since been released on bail.

The road, a major link between London, the East Midlands and the North East, was shut for around eight hours as a result of the crash.

Diversion routes were put in place, with the northbound carriageway also shut to traffic for around an hour while the air ambulance attended.

Some drivers were stuck for several hours, with delays also reported on surrounding roads as a result of the closure.

The road reopened shortly after midnight.

Sergeant Mark Atkins, from the Beds, Cambs and Herts Road Policing Unit, said: "I would like to appeal for anyone who has dashcam footage of the collision, or either vehicle in the moments leading up to it, to contact us.

"Many people stopped to help but have not yet provided statements, therefore I would also like to appeal for them to get in touch with us."

Roads are busier than usual this weekend due to the August Bank Holiday, with millions more journeys being made than usual as a result.

The RAC estimated that 19.2 million leisure trips by car will be made across the UK between Friday and Monday.

National Highways, which manages motorways and major A roads in England, said it will lift more than 500 miles of roadworks by 6am on Friday until Tuesday to “keep people moving”.
