Sharon Shoesmith – who was controversially invited to speak on child protection – said: “I think everyone expects that these cuts are going to hit hard on vulnerable children. It all does translate into higher risk for children, the risk of more children dying at the hands of their desperate parents.”

But director of charity Kidscape, Claude Knights, said it was a “joke” that Shoesmith spoke at the North of England Education Conference in Blackpool.
Shoesmith was sacked for her handling of Baby Peter’s case in Haringey, London. He died in 2007 at the hands of his mother Tracey Connelly, her lover Steven Barker and lodger Jason Owen.
