Police: 10% of PCs moonlight to boost pay
ONE in 10 officers with a leading police force is moonlighting to boost his or her income.
More than 200 Humberside officers have taken on part-time jobs that include farming accountancy, race driving instruction, after-dinner speaking, children’s entertaining and massaging.
In total, 216 officers out of a force of 2,024 have been allowed to pursue outside business interests, a Freedom of Information request has found.

A PC can earn up to £36,519, a sergeant £41,040 and an inspector £50,751.
The national average salary is £24,000 but in Humberside it is considerably lower.
Humberside officers received a 2.5 per cent pay rise last September but Police Federation chairman Steve Garmston said: “It is likely there will be a freeze for at least two years. They are looking at ways to make ends meet, like everyone else.”
Nigel Wilkinson of the East Yorkshire Federation of Small Businesses said: “I question the fact that the Government is paying someone who then has time to run another business.”
Andrew Allison of the TaxPayers’ Alliance added: “It’s fine as long as they are available to do their jobs.”
Det Insp Stewart Miller of Humberside Police said: “Any outside business interest should not prevent individuals from fulfilling policing duties and should only be completed outside their working duty.”
