Immigration: French let illegals head for Britain
FRENCH police are refusing to tackle illegal immigrants hoping to sneak into the UK from Calais as a protest at cuts ordered by President Sarkozy.
The elite riot police, the CRS, have declined to carry out checks at the port since Friday as part of industrial action across the country.
There are no official figures for how many migrants have taken advantage of the protests, but dozens are thought to try to cross the channel each day.

A spokesman for the CRS, who support frontier police in their duties, said the action would continue until cuts which threaten eight of the force’s companies were abandoned.
Officers, who are banned from striking, have been calling in sick.
Last night, there were growing fears that the action would leave Britain’s frontiers vulnerable.
However, a Home Office spokesman denied that the action would affect UK border controls.
