STRUGGLING consumers are being hit harder by soaring food and petrol prices than those abroad, the Chancellor has admitted.

George Osborne agreed the rise in inflation to four per cent was partly fuelled by the falling value of the pound. He said it had come about because Britain was “overpriced in the world” over the past decade. But he insisted the depreciation of sterling had helped British exporters.

He said he hoped decisions at this weekend’s G20 summit would help stabilise inflation. Mr Osborne was speaking after a meeting with finance ministers in Paris.
