Shrien Dewani to appeal South Africa trial
THE man accused of ordering the murder of his honeymoon bride yesterday lodged an appeal against his extradition to South Africa.
Shrien Dewani’s High Court challenge comes two days after Home Secretary Theresa May signed papers ordering he be sent back for trial.
In August a judge had ruled Dewani could be extradited.
Swedish-born Anni Dewani, 28, was shot dead in an apparent carjacking in an impoverished township on the outskirts of Cape Town last November.
Dewani, 31, and the couple’s taxi driver were freed unhurt.
But Mrs Dewani’s body was later found in the abandoned car.
The Bristol care home owner was implicated in her killing by the taxi driver Zola Tongo.
He claimed in a plea bargain that Dewani had offered him £1,400 to arrange a hit.
Dewani has always maintained his innocence and claims he would not receive a fair trial in South Africa.
