Flash flood Britons are named
TWO elderly Britons killed when a flash flood swept through an open-air market in a Spanish seaside resort were named last night.
Tourists Kenneth Hall, 72, and his wife Mary, 70, from Walton, Lancs, were sitting outside a cafe stall in Cala Finestrat on the Costa Blanca, near Benidorm, when a river burst its banks.
The torrent swept through a ravine where the market was held. It had been paved over illegally and the local council had been fined 83,000 euros (£72,000) and warned not to hold events there.
The couple were seen clinging frantically to parts of the cafe before being swept away.
The cafe owner was also washed away but managed to save himself.
Market trader Blanca Maria said she and others had previously complained about the risk of flooding.
