Police probe John Terry ‘racism’
ENGLAND football captain John Terry faced a police investigation last night after he allegedly racially abused a black player.
An incident involving the Chelsea captain and Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand is being “assessed” by detectives. The Football Association last night also launched an investigation.
John Terry, 30, has been accused of using foul language and shouting a racially abusive comment at Ferdinand during the west London derby on Sunday.
Video of Terry appeared on the internet after the game at QPR’s Loftus Road ground.
Some sites have removed the footage due to the apparently obscene content.
The player has denied using racist words and insists they were taken out of context.
I’m disappointed that people have leapt to the wrong conclusions about the context of what I was seen to be saying
Terry said: “I’ve seen that there is a lot of comments on the internet with regards to some video footage of me during the game.
“I’m disappointed that people have leapt to the wrong conclusions about the context of what I was seen to be saying to Anton Ferdinand.
“I would never say such a thing and I’m saddened that people would think so.”
A full-scale investigation could follow the initial assessment that was triggered after a complaint from a member of the public.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “We confirm police have been notified of an incident on Sunday October 23 involving alleged racial abuse. This is being assessed by officers.”
