David Cameron rules out pay rises for MPs
PAY hikes for MPs would be “unthinkable” unless the “cost of politics” is frozen or cut, David Cameron said yesterday.
The Prime Minister signalled he is ready to put himself on a collision course with his own MPs by warning them not to expect an automatic pay increase if he wins the 2015 election.
The Commons pay watchdog is expected to recommend a rise worth £10,000 on top of MPs’ current £66,396 salary, in return for a cut in their pension deal. Sources said Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority chief Sir Ian Kennedy, who will give his views in a speech on Friday, believes they need a rise of £20,000 but that would cause public uproar.
Mr Cameron said in a visit to Pakistan yesterday: “Anything would be unthinkable unless the cost of politics was frozen and cut.”
