Speedboat kills dolphin calf
POLICE are investigating the death of a dolphin in a Cornish estuary.
Powerboat users raced to the Camel estuary in Padstow to see inshore bottlenose dolphins.
But tragically, a calf was fatally hurt by one of the boats in front of people on a charter vessel, who called police.
The rare dolphins are one of only three inshore pods in Britain and are protected by the Wildlife Act 1981.
A £2,000 reward has been offered to trace whoever is responsible
It is thought a group of boats surrounded a pod of a dozen dolphins near Daymer Bay at 3.30pm on Saturday as news spread of their arrival.
A £2,000 reward has been offered to trace whoever is responsible.
Abby Crosby, Marine Conservation Officer at the Cornwall Wildlife Trust, said: “It’s a massive tragedy. We need to educate power boat owners about how special this species is.
“These creatures are intelligent. They will mourn the loss of a calf.”
