BE prepared for the lights to flicker as more than half a million football fans reach for the kettle at the same time.

The National Grid expects the biggest power surge of the World Cup at half-time in England’s clash with Uruguay as tea is made and lights go on.

The surge will hit at about 8.45pm next Thursday.

The first peak, equivalent to 160,000 kettles, is due at half-time at 9.45pm today in Brazil v Croatia.

Tomorrow’s Spain v Netherlands match is likely to trigger a surge at 8.45pm, with another at 11.45pm on Saturday in England v Italy.

Another major loading is due on June 24 at 5.45pm during England v Costa Rica.

The Grid warned: “We expect the size of these surges to increase if England progress further.”
