Gay bishop says snub is 'mistake'
THE world’s first openly gay bishop yesterday said the Archbishop of Canterbury was in an “almost untenable” position in the Church row over homosexuality.
Controversial American cleric Gene Robinson said Dr Rowan Williams was trying to overcome deep divisions over the ordination of women and gay people.
But Bishop Robinson added: “No matter what he does he makes someone mad.”
The cleric, whose ordination in 2003 split the Anglican Communion, also described the decision to exclude him from this week’s Anglican Lambeth Conference as a “mistake”.
Last night Bishop Robinson delivered a gay rights sermon in Putney, London, which was interrupted by a lone protester who accused the cleric of being a “heretic”.
As he was escorted out of the church, the protester repeatedly shouted “repent, repent, repent”.
