Ashton Sexton-Farquhar, four, made the heart-rending gesture at the war memorial in Colchester, Essex.
Today would have been Shaun's 35th birthday. I just want Ashton to grow up knowing his dad was a hero
Shaun Sexton, formerly with the 3rd Battalion, the Parachute Regiment, was killed in Afghanistan in 2010 when Ashton was five months old. He had been working for a firm protecting aid workers.
Ashton's mother Trudy, 37, said: "Today would have been Shaun's 35th birthday. I just want Ashton to grow up knowing his dad was a hero."
