The court heard that the defendant, of Littlehampton, West Sussex, was only arrested in November despite the alleged incident happening eight months previously in March as police and the CPS carried out their investigation.
At the time of his arrest in November last year, a Sussex Police spokesman said: "A man has been charged with the rape of a woman in Worthing in the early hours of Sunday, March 22.
"The charge alleges that the 51-year-old woman was raped at about 1am to 1.30am that morning in the area of Eirene Road and George V Avenue in Worthing.
"The woman and man are known to each other."
