The burglar was rummaging through pensioner Grace Smith’s belongings after kicking her front door in and entering her property.
But the 89-year-old diabetic, who has always been known as Amazing Grace to her loved ones, began to beat the intruder during the daylight burglary.
She was about to sit down to watch Home and Away before she “suddenly” saw the man lurking in her Surrey home.
She said: “I thought it was the neighbours doing some DIY but suddenly there was this man stood in my house.
“He said there was something I needed to see at the end of my garden but I wasn’t falling for that one.
“He pushed past me and started looking through my handbags so I hit him until I was worn out. I smashed my light bulb when I aimed for his head.”
Smith said she saw the man stood in her living room
He could’ve punched me once and I would’ve been done for
She added: “He could’ve punched me once and I would’ve been done for but I didn’t think that at the time.
"I just thought ‘you’re not having any of my stuff’. I don’t have much, just my little treasures.
“People have often said I am Amazing Grace, I never thought I’d have to prove it.”
