A CRUEL relative stole nearly £10,000 of a 94-year-old dementia sufferer’s life-savings, a court heard.

Jane Boultby, 62, raided Sidney Boultby's bank account after she was given power of attorney over his finances.
The frail pensioner had entrusted Boultby, his niece-in-law, when dementia began to affect his mind and body.
She pleaded guilty to theft at Nottingham Crown Court and was given an 18-month prison sentence suspended for two years, with 180 hours of unpaid community work.

After the case, Sidney’s son Philip, 51, said the betrayal left his father “heartbroken”.

He added: “Shame on her. Dad never gave Jane permission to use his bank account.
“It made him sick and he went downhill fast. He cried and said it broke his heart.”
Judge Stuart Rafferty spared Boultby from going to jail.

He said all Mr Boultby’s other relatives lived away and he believed she came to resent him after all the responsibility of care fell on her shoulders.
He added: “You were struggling to cope. Plainly he was beginning to fade, both mentally and physically.
“There is no evidence you were whooping it up with the money.”
Clarkson Baptiste, defending, said Boultby, of Carlton, Nottinghamshire, had shown remorse.
