Taking up the role of “chief mouser” the moggy has already racked up an impressive online following.
Palmerston, named after Viscount Palmerston who twice served as Prime Minister and was foreign secretary in the 1800s, was quick off the mark with an official Twitter account.

And after racing to almost 2,000 followers, the furry feline has been entertaining his new fans with updates on his job.
One Tweet read: “Wasn't expecting to give media interviews on my 1st day!”

The latest Government recruit, who arrived from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, was also pictured playing with brown string in a picture captioned: “Making myself at home”.
The Foreign Office said his outlay will be paid for by a “staff kitty”.

Palmerston will spend his time helping pest controllers rid the historic King Charles Street office of pesky mice.
And he’s sure not to be too lonely as he’ll be living just a short space away from David Cameron’s famed cat Larry.
