The programme will be rolled out from Wednesday in a bid to prevent health problems like heart disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease.
Under the Government plans the checks will become available at GP surgeries, health centres, walk-in centres and pharmacies across England. The checks will include recording patients’ blood pressure, family history, and a test for cholesterol.
After the health check everyone will receive a personal assessment, setting out their level of risk and suggesting healthier lifestyles.
Health Secretary Alan Johnson said: “Health checks will help to prevent 1,600 heart attacks and strokes every year and save around 650 lives.
“The checks will provide people with tailored health advice.”
