Joe Biden has been dealt a major blow as a first Senator from the Democratic Party has cut ties with the US president and issued a shocking warning over the future of the party ahead of the presidential election in November.

Colorado's Michael Bennet took the decision to break away from the Biden campaign following the US President's awful performance during his debate with Republican nominee Donald Trump.

Bennet believes Biden is set to lose to Trump in the election, making him the first Democrat Senator to publicly suggest this.

In an interview on Tuesday, he reaffirmed his stance, repeating that, if nothing changes, Trump will beat Biden at the polls later this year.

He told CNN: "Well, it's true that I said that and I did say that behind closed doors and you guys and others asked whether I said it, and that is what I said. So, I figured I should come here and say it publicly."

Bennet, who ran for president for a brief period in 2020, did not expressly call for Biden to drop out of the race, but said Democrats could lose their power in the Senate and the House on top of the presidency.

He said: "Donald Trump is on track, I think, to win this election and maybe win it by a landslide and take with him the Senate and the House. I think that we could lose the whole thing."

The Democrat expressed his concerns regarding "the future of our country" and the threat that Trump poses, one that Biden is feared not to be equipped to fight.

He continued: "It's not a question about politics. It's a moral question about the future of our country. And I think it's critically important for us to come to grips with what we face if together, we put this country on the path of electing Donald Trump again.

"These are my voters who have said to me, 'I've been through this with my mom, I've been through this with my dad. I'm terrified about what it will mean if Donald Trump is elected president again in this country'."

Bennet revealed that Democrats in the Senate will discuss the issue of Biden's campaign this week, and he continues to receive pressure over the state of the president's health.

Biden campaign spokesperson Kevin Munoz responded: "No one is more committed to defeating Donald Trump and defending our democracy than Joe Biden

"And few know better than Joe Biden the importance of showing up and campaigning to earn the support of voters. This was always going to be a close race."
