Donald Trump was rushed away from his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania after suspected gunshots rang out just minutes after he took to the stage to address the sizeable crowd.

Now, an eyewitness who was in the audience when the incident occurred is saying that he and others spotted an unidentified man on top on a building before the presumed shots ran out.

During an interview with BBC, the man said that he saw the man "bear-crawling up the roof of the building about 50ft away from us."

He added: "He had a rifle, you could clearly see. We were pointing at him and told the police.

"I'm thinking to myself, 'why is Trump still speaking?" he continued. "Why haven't they pulled him off the stage?'

"I'm standing there pointing at him for two to three minutes and next thing you know, five shots ran out."

The man claimed he and several other audience members tried to raise the alarm: "We were telling the police, we were pointing at him for the Secret Service who were looking at us from the top of the barn. They were looking at us the whole time."

He then explained that it was likely possible that the Secret Service wasn't unable to spot the alleged suspect from their vantage point.

The eyewitness also alleged that the security agents "blew [the suspect's head off]."

However, the Secret Service has not confirmed the identity of the alleged shooter.

A spokesperson for Trump has confirmed that he is doing well, saying in a statement: "President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act. He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility."

President Biden has also been briefed about the presumed shooting. "I’m grateful to hear that he’s safe and doing well," he said. "I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information."

Biden added: "Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it."
