An eyewitness said there was "blood everywhere" as former President Trump was injured in an apparent assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The US secret service, tasked with protecting serving and former Commanders-in-Chief said the suspected shooter fired from an "elevated position" killing at least one person and critically injuring two others. The suspect was then killed by law enforcement.

Brandon Christie, who was at the campaign event on Saturday, told "Hannity" that he initially thought the "pop" of a gunshot was just speaker crackling before people started screaming.

He and his family scrambled to to the floor as a Secret Service member allegedly discharged his weapon a number of times in the direction of the shooter.

"There was just blood everywhere," Christie said.

Another attendee told Fox News she heard a noise like firecrackers before the crowd was ordered to get down.

"We huddled and we just started praying," she told the outlet. "The lady in front of me that laid on top of me, she was crying. I just said, 'It's going to be OK, honey.'"

An emergency room doctor said he performed CPR on a member of the crowd who had been shot.

"I heard the shots," the doctor told Jake Rosen of CBS News. "I thought it was firecrackers to begin with. Somebody over there was screaming, 'he's been shot, he's been shot.'

"So, I made my way over. I said I'm an emergency department physician. Let me help you.'

"There's lots of blood and he had brain matter," he said. "So I got him together so I got people there really helpful. I did CPR chest compressions as well."

Trump was seen clutching the side of his head and dropping to the ground as loud cracking noises where heard on the broadcast audio. Secret Service agents rushed the Republican off stage as he gave a defiant fist-pump in the air, with blood pouring from his right ear.

One audience member was killed as the bullets rained down, while two others are in a critical condition.

In a post on his Truth Social platform the following day, Trump said: "I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin."

He offered his condolences to those killed and injured in the attack and thanked the secret service and law enforcement for their "rapid response".

President Joe Biden said “everybody must condemn” the attack. “There’s no place in America for this type of violence,” he said. “It’s sick. It’s sick.”

Biden said he had attempted to contact the Republican following the shooting.

"I tried to get a hold of Donald - he's with his doctors," the President said. "Apparently, he's doing well. I hope I get to speak to him tonight."

In a statement, the FBI identified the suspect in the attack as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.

"This remains an active and ongoing investigation, and anyone with information that may assist with the investigation is encouraged to submit photos or videos online," the statement added.
