Trump shooting: Donald Trump appears well as he walks off plane

This horrifying photo shows just how close Donald Trump came to death at a rally in Pennsylvania.

The former president was pictured covered in blood after a shooter, identified by the FBI as 20 year old Thomas Matthew Crooks, fired at him during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, local time.

The harrowing image shows a grey streak - a bullet in motion - mere inches away from Trump's head.

This follows a video that captured the split-second manoeuvre Trump made just as the bullet sped past his head.

Just before the bullet grazed his ear, Trump turned his head slightly - a fortuitous movement that may have saved him from more serious injuries or even death.

Moments after Trump adjusted his position, the bullet seemed to hit him in the ear.

In the top right corner of the footage, a fast-moving grey blur, possibly the bullet, can be seen at the eight-second mark.

Trump said a bullet "pierced" part of his ear in the incident, which happened at a campaign rally in the US.

The suspected gunman was killed while the Secret Service confirmed one person in the crowd had died, with two others "critically injured".

The Republican is attempting to return to the White House in November's presidential elections, with Saturday's rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, part of his re-election campaign.

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said he was "appalled" by the shooting, while in Scotland the First Minister made clear such violence had "no place in a democratic society".

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who recently returned from Washington DC for the 75th anniversary of Nato, said he hopes the US "emerges stronger" from the shooting."

Such violence has no justification and no place anywhere in the world," he continued in a post to X, formerly Twitter. "Never should violence prevail. I am relieved to learn that Donald Trump is now safe and wish him a speedy recovery.

"My condolences go out to the close ones of this attack's victim, a rally attendee. "I extend my wishes for strength to everyone who is horrified by this event. I wish America emerges stronger from this."

European Council president Charles Michel also "strongly condemned" the attack, adding in his post to X: "Political violence is absolutely unacceptable in a democracy."

French president Emmanuel Macron struck a similar tone, describing the attempt on Mr Trump's life as "a tragedy for our democracies".

"My thoughts are with President Donald Trump, the victim of an assassination attempt," Mr Macron posted.

"I send him my wishes for a speedy recovery. A spectator has died, several are injured. It is a tragedy for our democracies."
