Met Office verdict on when Britain will bask in temperatures over 20C after deluge of rain

Parts of the UK look set to see temperatures up to 23C, though some areas could be in for more cloud and rain, the Met Office says.

UK weather: Met Office forecasts warm and settled conditions

Sun worshippers can look forward to basking in 23C in some parts of the UK this weekend as meteorological summer begins. The mercury could rise that high on Sunday (June 2), with Met Office weather maps turning orange and showing 22C in London, 19C in Cardiff and 17C in Plymouth.

It comes after much of the country has battled heavy rain and showers, with more in store as forecasters predict this summer could be one of the wettest on record.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said while part of the UK could see a shower or a spot of rain, it will for the most part be "pretty settled" because of high-pressure building from the west.

He said on Saturday (June 1) that despite a northerly flow it should feel relatively warm, with temperatures peaking in the high teens or low 20s.

Mr Burkill said where it remains quite cloudy, temperatures will be suppressed, warning pollen counts will be moderate to high in parts of the south, East Anglia, Midlands and Wales on Saturday and Sunday (June 2).

Saturday evening will stay pretty dry, with a fine end to the day and most cloud clearing overnight, apart from in the northwest of Scotland, which may see some drizzly rain, according to the Met Office.

Sunday morning will be a bit chillier and fresher compared to Saturday morning, with cloud and rain drifting in across parts of Scotland. Clouds could spread to Northern Ireland and the North of England.

Mr Burkill said: "Across the rest of England and Wales it will be largely sunny skies and with the sunshine temperatures rising quite nicely - highs of around 22C or 23C, so feeling warmer than on Saturday, although, towards the north, where we have that cloud, it is going to feel a little bit fresher."

Eastern parts of Scotland could still get into the low 20s, with "bright, sunny weather" to be had there, according to the Met Office meteorologist.

Weather maps generated by WX Charts using MetDesk data show maximum temperatures in the mid-teens for most of the UK by 6pm on Saturday, with 15C in Birmingham, 17C in Newcastle and 16C in Aberdeen.

Sunday at the same time will see maximum temperatures of 20C in London, 15C in Edinburgh and 16C or so in Cardiff, according to WX Charts.

A weather system pushing in looks set to bring cloud and a few spots of rain on Monday into Tuesday (June 3-4), with northern parts of the UK set to see the wettest weather, according to the Met Office.
