Met Office reveals exact date UK summer will start and Brits won't be happy

The national weather forecaster predicts things won't start heating up for the country until this time.

UK weather: Met Office warns of cooler conditions for early June

Met Office weather experts have revealed Brits shouldn't get too excited about summer arriving just yet as the warm temperatures won't hit properly until the end of June.

Meteorological summer officially started at the weekend, but the longest day of the year falls on June 20.

And according to predictions from the Met Office, we might have to wait till later this month for a true "taste of summer". Maps from WXCharts even show a potential cold snap arriving this week.

Many Brits will have been hopeful warm weather was here to stay after a bright weekend, with temperatures hitting 24C on Sunday June 2.

However, Marco Petagna, a forecaster at the Met Office, told the Telegraph: “It’s been a taste of summer for the first couple of days, but for the week ahead and much of June it’s looking more mixed again, but there are signs that towards the end of June we could see something more settled, warmer and drier.

"For the three-month period as a whole [June, July and August], temperatures are likely to be above average overall so there’s a chance we’ll see some hot spells at times but the signals on rainfall are quite balanced, there’s equal chances of whether it will be wet or dry."

On a positive note, Mr Petagna said "temperatures overall" were expected to be warmer across the next three months.

Maps from WXCharts do show an unsettled weekend on the way with rain and colder temperatures, especially in the north and Scotland.

Despite warmer conditions over the weekend, in parts of the Cotswolds and around Oxfordshire and Suffolk today there several flood alert warnings in place.
