Mustard’s call of the mild
FIERY English mustard is under threat from milder continental rivals.
The decline of the traditional family Sunday roast is also blamed for its drop in popularity.
Sales of English mustard are down 6.4 per cent with many consumers switching to milder American and French varieties. Premium French brand Grey Poupon has seen its sales increase by a third, according to market research analysts TNS.
Mark Bosworth, of English Provender which makes condiments, told The Grocer magazine: “Younger people do not buy into it as much and there has been a decline in formal eating occasions such as Sunday lunch. Mustard could do with an image makeover.”
