The fire has so far resulted in more than 40 injuries - one serious - but there have been no deaths.
Poignant pictures show silhouetted firefighters frantically battling the blaze in the dark, while others show a children's swing melted by the heat.
The blaze has scorched 23,500 hectares, according to the European Forest Fire Information System
The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) has issued this caution to holidaymakers: "ABTA is monitoring the situation with forest fires in Monchique, in the Algarve.
People on holiday in the area, or planning to visit the area on a day trip, are advised to avoid the affected areas
"People on holiday in the area, or planning to visit the area on a day trip, are advised to avoid the affected areas and to monitor news reports and follow any advice or instructions issued by the local authorities, their accommodation providers or the Foreign Office."
Bulldozers have created firebreaks to help stop the blaze, which has now ravaged an estimated area of more than 60 miles.
However a fall in temperatures should help firefighters, with a maximum of 26 degrees Celsius forecast for today.
The Civil Protection Agency's deputy commander Patricia Gaspar has confirmed that military units are patrolling forests to check for fresh outbreaks.
