47 killed in Bangladesh mudslides
Powerful landslides triggered by heavy rains have killed at least 47 people including three soldiers in south-eastern Bangladesh.
The mudslides struck in two areas in the southern coastal area of Cox's Bazar - 185 miles south of the capital Dhaka.
Giasuddin Ahmed, chief government administrator in the area, said 19 bodies were initially recovered from landslides in Cox's Bazar.
Another 20 bodies were found later, said ANM Nazim Uddin, another official.
Mohammad Jasim Uddin, an additional district magistrate in Cox's Bazar, later confirmed the deaths of another three soldiers at a makeshift camp in the district's Ramu area.
The magistrate said three other soldiers trapped under mud were feared dead.
Rescue operations were hampered by continuing rain, with many main roads inundated.
A depression in the Bay of Bengal caused incessant downpours in the hilly and forested region, causing the landslides.
