Veliko Tarnovo is a city in north-central Bulgaria known for its mediaeval ruins and its picturesque cityscape.
During mediaeval times the city was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom and the centre for political, religious and administrative decisions at the time.
Considered to be one of the oldest cities in Bulgaria Veliko Tarnovo offers a fairytale scenery blending new and old architectural gems. The cobblestone streets wind past charming houses, while the red rooftops spill down the cliffside.
Tsarevets is a symbol of the city with the reconstructed fortress of Veliko Tarnovo being one of the most famous places to visit in the city and one of Bulgaria’s most loved monuments. The fortress dominates the skyline attracting thousands of tourists.
In the evening, people can enjoy the impressive ‘Sound and Light’ show over the Tsarevets fortress. The whole fortress is lit up and the show tells the history of Tsarevets and the Second Bulgarian Kingdom through sound and light.
While walking through the picturesque streets make sure to take a stroll through the legendary Gurko Street, it is one of the central streets of the Old Town offering beautiful views of the Yantra River and Asenevtsi Monument.
On Gurko Street you can find the famous Gurko restaurant that serves traditional Bulgarian food.

As you are walking down Gurko Street, make sure you do not miss visiting the Sarafkina House.
The house was built in 1861 for a wealthy banker but today it’s a museum. Although only two out of 12 floors are open, the exhibition shows a variety of everyday objects, furniture, national clothing, old photographs from the end of the 18th century – beginning of the 19th century.
The most popular type of accommodation in Veliko Tarnovo is a guest house. There are some four-star hotels in the city, but most of the hotels have three stars.
