The funeral of Jay Slater is taking place on Saturday, August 10 - almost two months after he went missing in Tenerife.

The 19-year-old, an apprentice bricklayer from Oswaldtwistle in Lancashire, went missing on June 16, prompting a major search on the island.

Slater was staying with friends in Los Cristianos the south of the island, but after meeting two men at a rave on Sunday, June 16, went back to their Airbnb near Masca in the north west - an 11-hour walk from his accommodation.

His body was found around four weeks later, with a post-mortem suggesting injuries consistent with a fall, and that Jay had died instantaneously.

The last person to see him was the owner of the rental property, who said they saw him walking off into the distance after apparently missing the bus back to Los Cristianos. His friend, Lucy Law, was the last person to hear from him.

Who is Lucy Law?

Lucy Law is a friend of Jay. She was the last person to speak to Jay, and set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for Jay's family after their search started in Tenerife. Since setting up the GoFundMe page, Lucy has raised more than £72,000 for Jay's family.

Lucy Law and Jay attended a rave at Papagayo nightclub on June 16 during the NRG music festival in Tenerife. She recounted on the GoFundMe page that she had left the party earlier than everyone else and was woken up by a call from Jay at 8 am.

Last phone call with Jay

Jay told Lucy he had missed the bus home after staying with two men he met at the club and was faced with a 10-hour walk back to his hotel from their accommodation near Masca village.

He mentioned he was lost, his phone was about to die, and he needed water. Lucy tracked down the two people who saw him an hour before he disappeared. They told her Jay had gone out to buy cigarettes before returning and then left to catch a bus back to his accommodation.

Despite the bus stop being visible from the house, Jay did not make it back. An American woman later offered Lucy a lift to search the mountains where Jay was last seen, but there was no sign of him. At the time, Lucy described his disappearance as "weird and suspicious".

A “celebration of life service” for Mr Slater is set to take place at Accrington Cemetery Chapel before interment.

Floral tributes will come from the family but “if anyone would like to bring a single rose to place with Jay, they are more than welcome”, his relatives said in a statement issued through LBT Global.

In a tribute, his family said: “A loving son of Debbie and Warren, a cherished brother of Zak and brother-in-law of Jessica, a treasured grandson of Dawn, June and the late Dougie, a much-loved nephew of Glen and Katie, a dear cousin of Maddie and Tillie and a loyal friend to many. Jay will be very sadly missed by all those who knew him.”

The family said: “After Jay left Rhyddings High School he went on to become an apprentice bricklayer with the PH Build group, a job he greatly enjoyed.

“At the young age of five Jay started playing football for Huncoat United FC until the age of 17 and also did a few seasons with the Sunday team at St Joesph’s too.

“He also loved spending time chilling out with his friends.

“Jay’s love of music and dance started at a very young age. He loved attending music festivals and events across the country and also loved to socialise and meet new people.”
