The UK Foreign Office has released a major update on Wednesday after two Brits were shot dead and found in a burnt-out car in Sweden on Sunday afternoon.

A FCDO Spokesperson told Express.co.uk: "We are supporting the families of two British men reported missing in Sweden and are in touch with the local authorities".

The driver and passenger, both believed to be British citizens, were found in the burnt out wreck of a Toyota RAV4 that had been set on fire in Malmo. Detectives say they have some "idea" of who the victims are and Swedish police do not believe they are Danish citizens.

They are working to identify the bodies, the daily newspaper Aftonbladet reported on Tuesday. Police spokesman Patrtic Sors told the BBC that more forensic testing will take place on Wednesday morning.

Mr Sors said he believed a British man had rented the car, a black Danish-registered Toyota RAV4, at Copenhagen Airport in Denmark hours before the bodies were discovered in the Fosie industrial area of Malmö.

The car was then driven over the border to Sweden and was last seen driving past the Öresund Bridge toll station on Sunday afternoon. It was then set on fire at the industrial area of Fosie in the city.

Interpol have also been brought into the investigation as the victims had crossed international borders.

Two British men were reported missing in Sweden, the Foreign Office said, soon after it was announced that the bodies had been found. The FCDO travel advice for Sweden had also previously highested that gang-related crime has been reported in Malmo, Stockholm and Gothenburg.

The gun-murder rate in the Swedish capital was roughly 30 times that of London on a per capita basis in 2022, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Police are asking for information about any sightings of the Danish-registered car. They want anybody who saw the black Toyota between 11.30am and 2pm on Sunday, July 14 to get in touch.
