A glimpse into the lair of Pirates’ sea monster
THE lair where a giant mythical sea monster, the worst nightmare of Viking explorers, would drag its prey has been found, an expert claims.
The Kraken, possibly a 100ft squid, even arranged the skeletons of its victims in patterns, insists paleontologist Mark McMenamin.
And these designs even resemble the creature itself, making the fossils – dating back 250 million years to the Triassic period – the earliest self- portrait. His study suggests the creature – a cephalopod that is said to have pulled ships under the sea with tentacles before eating its crew – may have really existed. A Kraken was seen in the Pirates Of The Caribbean movies.

Professor McMenamin, of Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, gave his findings to The Geological Society of America after studying remains of nine 45ft Ichthyosaurs at Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park, Nevada.
He said: “It was a very odd configuration of bones. I think they were captured by the Kraken.”
