Francois Hollande's camel eaten
A CAMEL given to French President Francois Hollande has been eaten by the family he asked to care for it.
Mr Hollande was presented with the animal during a visit to the remote African town of Timbuktu in war-torn Mali.
The gesture was to thank him for sending French troops to defeat militant Islamic rebels in February.
The President at first planned to bring the camel back to France and keep it in a zoo but left it in Mali because of the problems of transporting it.
He asked a local family to look after it, joking at the time: “I’ll use it as a means of transport whenever I come back.”
Alas it has now emerged that the family slaughtered the camel and used its meat to make a traditional Saharan tagine stew.
