Cake is tastier after singing 'Happy Birthday' claim scientists
SINGING Happy Birthday – even off-key – before having a slice of cake apparently makes it taste better.
Rituals performed before eating, such as saying grace, or making a wish and blowing out candles, are a flavour enhancer as well as making the event more memorable, say scientists.
Among their study’s experiments, participants ate chocolate in different ways, some spending time unwrapping it while others ate it without ceremony.
Those who performed the “ritual” rated the chocolate more highly, savoured it more and were willing to pay more for it.
Results of the US research at the University of Minnesota are published in the journal Psychological Science.
