Suicide bomber kills one in Baghdad
A suicide bomber on a motorcycle has struck a Baghdad checkpoint manned by US-allied fighters, killing one and wounding four.
It is the latest attack targeting Sunni groups that have turned against al Qaida in Iraq.
The attacker detonated his explosives in the Sunni area of Silaikh in northern Baghdad, according to police and hospital officials.
Members of so-called awakening councils who have joined forces with the Americans have frequently been targeted by Sunni insurgents seeking to derail recent security gains.
The groups, which are bankrolled by the US military, along with the 2007 American troop build-up and a ceasefire by radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr have been key factors in a steep drop in violence over the past year.
The US military, meanwhile, continued its campaign against al Qaida linked insurgents in northern Iraq.
American troops going after a bombing network have killed four suspected militants after they refused to evacuate a building in Mosul, 225 miles north-west of Baghdad, the military said.
Also in Mosul, US troops captured a mid-level al Qaida in Iraq leader accused of overseeing attacks and helping smuggle foreign militants into the city, the military said.
Mosul has been the centre of an ongoing US-Iraqi operation against the most prominent remaining stronghold of al-Qaida in Iraq, a Sunni extremist group.
