Woman hurt in grizzly bear attack
A 21-year-old woman needed emergency surgery after being attacked by a grizzly bear about 25 yards from an Alaskan lodge.
Abby Sist, of Utah, was attacked as she returned from a hike to the Kenai Princess Lodge in Cooper Landing late on Wednesday.
Alaska State Troopers spokeswoman Beth Ipsen said another guest at the lodge saw the bear on top of the woman and ran outside to help. She said the guest scared the bear off.
She said Abby Sist underwent emergency surgery but her condition was not known.
Cooper Landing is about 50 miles south-west of Anchorage on the Kenai Peninsula.
Meanwhile, another woman was recovering from horrific injuries after being attacked by a bear while walking her two dogs in a rural area of Southern California.
Amazingly, the woman managed to escape and drive herself to a nearby fire station.
The woman suffered severe cuts to her face and head in the attack and was airlifted to UCLA Medical Centre in Los Angeles, said county fire spokesman Sean Collins.
Allena Hansen, 56, was resting comfortably after undergoing extensive surgery, according to Roxanne Moster, a spokeswoman for the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Centre.
Game wardens were looking for the animal.
