Chinese military law 'unnecessary'
Taiwan's president said a Chinese law codifying the use of military force against the island is "unnecessary" and "unfeasible" in view of warming ties between the two rivals.
Ma Ying-jeou's statement comes on the fourth anniversary of China's anti-secession law.
The law stipulates China can attack Taiwan if the island moves to formalise its independence.
Taiwan and China split amid civil war in 1949, but Beijing continues to claim the island as part of its territory.
Mr Ma said in a statement Taiwan and China should handle their ties in a peaceful and equal manner.
Since Mr Ma's inauguration last May, he has improved long-strained ties with China by facilitating high-level talks and initiating regular direct transportation links.
