Sunday Brunch fans call out Alex Scott over blunder after she takes aim at England team

Sunday Brunch guest Alex Scott was called out after making a savage swipe at the England football team, before appearing to have had a memory lapse about the World Cup.

Alex Scott jokes team needs 'all the help they can get'

Former Lionesses legend turned pundit Alex Scott was one of this morning's special guests on Channel 4's Sunday Brunch - but she raised hackles with a few viewers over her World Cup swipe. First, she quipped that the England team "need all the help they can get" after poor performances, as co-stars including astronomer Brian Cox and This Morning star and Express columnist Richard Madeley looked on.

Richard then followed up to share a story of how, as the "oldest person in the room" at age 68, he could remember fonder moments of British victories - including when England won the World Cup. "I'm the only person who can actually remember England winning the World Cup - you know, I was actually alive and sentient at the time," he exclaimed.

He revealed that he remembered exactly where he was when the crucial goal was scored, before shocking fellow guests by giving out his childhood address on Dagenham Road in Romford. He then quipped: "The problem with that is it it sets you up for life, thinking England are gonna win!"

As fellow guests sniggered, Richard added: "You have a lifetime of disappointment ahead of you." Alex then chimed in with a huge smile that the Lionesses had won a couple of years earlier, and Richard apologised: "Sorry, I should have thought of that."

However, it was in fact Alex who'd seemingly made the blunder, as although the women's team had won the Euro championships back in 2022, they hadn't clinched the World Cup. Meanwhile, the following year, they'd endured a disappointing defeat right at the last minute as Spain claimed the victory.

It has since been clarified that Alex intended to refer to the England team specifically playing at Soccer Aid, not the actual England team. She made her appearance on Sunday Brunch to raise awareness for Soccer Aid and charity partner UNICEF.

Twitter followers picked up on the mistake quickly, with one writing: "[Richard] said he was the only one there that could remember England winning the World Cup. Alex Scott dropped the clanger saying the England Women won it, but they won the Euros, not the World Cup #sundaybrunch."

Another disgruntled fan exclaimed: "In case Alex Scott isn’t on enough of your favourite BBC shows, she’s been brought across to Channel 4 too."

There was more confusion from Alex later in the show, during a team game, when a historic alleged quote surfaced from her, saying that she dislikes snacks and finds them "weird".

Alex seemed puzzled as she shot back: "Who said that? When? is this part of the game? I'm confused."

She was told: "Apparently you said it", only for her to contradict: "No! I love a good snack."

Meanwhile, Richard was quizzed on how he felt when England won the World Cup.

He revealed that he'd been just ten years old when Britain made its first - and to date only - win, defeating West Germany with an impressive 4-2 score in the final.

Richard continued that he'd "never seen it so quiet" as everyone crowded around their TV screens at home.

"It was like people were expecting to see the neutron bomb going off, there was nobody on the streets!" he joked.
