BBC Breakfast addressed the tragic murder of racing commentator John Hunt's wife and daughters at their Hertfordshire home, with one star becoming choked up on-air

John Hunt: Mark Chapman shares support for BBC colleague

One BBC star broke down live on-air when addressing the death of his co-star John Hunt’s family on BBC Breakfast.

Hunt, a racing commentator for the BBC, hit headlines this week when his wife and two daughters were tragically murdered at their home in Bushey, Hertfordshire. Carol Hunt, 61, Hannah Hunt, 28 and Louise Hunt, 25, were found seriously injured but sadly died at the scene.

Now suspect Kyle Clifford, 26, has been arrested after a manhunt, with him found injured close to a North London cemetery. Police said no shots were fired, but Clifford was taken to hospital to treat his injuries.

John’s co-star Mark Chapman, who presents on BBC Radio 5 Live, addressed the tragic circumstances during his Euros 2024 coverage on the radio during the pre-match between England and the Netherlands. Sounding as though tears were holding him back, Mark admitted: “This has been a heartbreaking day.

“John Hunt is our colleague and our friend, not just to the current 5 Live sport team but to all of those who’ve worked here with him over the past 20 years, and to all of you who have enjoyed his superb commentaries.”

There was a definite wobble in Mark’s voice as he addressed the murders, and his voice broke as he tried to continue: “So on behalf of everybody connected to 5 Live sport, our love and thoughts and support are with John and his family.”

Tears were clearly audible in his voice and Mark had to take several deep breaths during his radio segment, which was re-aired on BBC Breakfast, with Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt reporting from the red sofa.

Tributes have been pouring in for the family and victims, with former footballer Michael Owen writing on X: “And while the country celebrate [England’s victory], spare a thought for John Hunt. I can't remember feeling so utterly horrified in years. Those poor girls. Truly horrific."

Ex-BBC presenter Dan Walker added: “Just read through the news about John Hunt and his family. Absolutely devastating. Great commentator and even better man. What a terrible tragedy.”

Naga said: “It’s a horrific story. Tributes are being paid to three women who have been killed in a crossbow attack in Hertfordshire.”

Roving reporter Aruna Iyengar was on the scene in Bushey, and Naga addressed her: “I can only imagine that the community there is reeling from what has happened.” Aruna said: “Today, this morning, people are leaving wreaths and flowers outside the house where this happened.

“Also there’s a police presence here – police are wanting to reassure the community. Also they have more forensic tests to make on the house and on the area surrounding it.”
