BBC viewers have branded Sherwood as the "most compelling show since Broadchurch" after season two returns this weekend.

BBC fans are thrilled that Sherwood is set to return on August 25th for season two. However, viewers have urged others to binge-watch all the episodes on iPlayer following rave reviews.

The acclaimed drama is a must-watch crime thriller set in a 1980s Nottinghamshire community still dealing with the after-effects of the miners' strike. In compelling scenes, the village is broken once again after two shocking murders rock their lives.

This led to one of the largest manhunts known in British history. Created by James Graham and directed by the acclaimed British film director Clio Barnard it is inspired by real-life events.

With it starring the likes of David Morrissey, Lesley Manville and Robert Glenister. The first series landed on the network back in June 2022 and received a stellar review.

Critics were left speechless which left the show bagging an unheard-of perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Eager fans have advised everyone to catch up on the show on iPlayer in preparation for Sunday.

Taking to social media, fans leapt to Instagram to praise the crime show and wrote: “You *should* watch the first series of Sherwood this weekend if you haven't already on BBC iPlayer. The second series starts with a double bill over the Bank Holiday.”

“Loved the first series; One of the best dramas of the past few years. S1 is on iplayer if you need a refresh or missed it the first time around,” said a second user.

While a third chimed in and said: “Binge watched BBC #Sherwood…excellent very compelling show. The cast is extraordinary. Loved every episode.”

“Sherwood on BBC coming back for second series on August 25th. Absolutely brilliant series, quality drama,” added a fourth.

A fifth continued: “I'm only 5 episodes in to #Sherwood but can safely say it's the greatest advocate for BBC drama I've seen in years. @davemorrissey64 and the cast are stellar & writing off the scale.”

“Whoah Sherwood on BBC One is like the best show i’ve seen in years the pacing, the editing, the plot, the ACTING?? The acting!!! Lesley Manville ate and left no crumbs whatsoever with that role,” claimed a sixth person.

After two years since gracing the small screen fans became obsessed with critics claiming it was “compelling”.

In the Evening Standard, Katie Rosseinsky wrote: "There’s not a weak link in this ensemble, and even the briefer supporting roles somehow feel lived in, a wonderful synthesis of writing and performance.”

The Guardian's Lucy Mangan gave it five stars, saying: “Forty years of emotion and history have been transmuted, lovingly and painstakingly, into art. It’s the cleverest, most compelling and most moving thing I’ve seen in years.”
