Outlander star Sophie Skelton has revealed some surprising insight into how the signature Craigh Na Dun scenes are actually filmed.

In the hit Starz series, the adventure begins when WWII nurse Claire Randall (played by Caitriona Balfe) is whisked back in time through the supernatural stones.

She soon meets Highlander Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and becomes Claire Fraser, later giving birth to their daughter Brianna (Sophie).

However, fans might be surprised how the pivotal time-travelling scenes actually occur on set.

Sophie even admitted the cast often get the giggles due to what they have to do to look as if their characters are disappearing.

An interview clip with the star was recently posted on Outlander’s official Instagram page whilst millions of fans await the return of season seven.

“I’ll try and give some funny things for you all to sit with to get you through Droughtlander,” she began, referring to the affectionate nickname viewers have given the show’s notoriously lengthy hiatuses.

“There are some scenes, especially when we’re going through the stones and stuff, that are always quite funny.”

The Scottish star revealed that, rather than using flashy special effects, the time-travelling Frasers are made to vanish using some simple camera trickery.

She continued: “When we do the big wide angle, of us going through the stones, we usually have to, as the camera pans around, we have to run around the other side of the stones.

“And when the camera comes back round, obviously, it reveals that nobody is there.”

Her comments played alongside a sweet montage of behind-the-scenes clips featuring Sophie and her co-star Richard Rankin, who portrays Brianna’s husband Roger MacKenzie.

Also in tow when Brianna and Roger went forward in time was their son Jemmy, portrayed by twins named Andrew and Matthew.

However, all four of them would be giggling like schoolboys when it came to dart behind one of the stones to disappear.

“Secretly, we’ve got the twins Andrew and Matthew, whichever one it may be in that take,” Sophie revealed.

“And Richard and me, all just kind of giggling behind the stones. So, I hope that doesn’t take the magic out of it for you, but it’s a nice little story.”

One fan replied encouragingly: “It's IMPOSSIBLE to take the magic out of Outlander.”

Viewers won’t have to wait too long for the magic to return, as the final episodes of season seven will be out in just a few months.

Outlander season 7, part 2 premieres Sunday, November 22 on Starz.
