Joanna Lumley’s Greek Odyssey
THE Greek islands are destinations for many British holidaymakers but beyond the deckchairs and white sands is an ancient culture.
Lumley starts this week’s journey on Crete where she learns about a way of life that has lasted for centuries.
In the remote mountains she spends time with shepherds and learns how they helped fight the Nazi occupation alongside Patrick Leigh Fermor, a member of the British Special Operations Executive, whose exploits became the basis for the film Ill Met By Moonlight.
On Kos she explores the birthplace of the father of modern medicine, Hippocrates, before ascending an active volcano on the island of Nisyros.
