Matchroom Boxing chief Eddie Hearn has teased that a long-awaited contest between heavyweight superstars Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury may finally be in the offing. The promoter, who represents 'AJ' admitted that the prospect of the British legends finally facing off in the ring may take place after their next respective fights.

The pair have famously never done battle, with the perennial flirtation between the rival camps over a 'Battle of Britain' spectacle never amounting to a concrete date. Both stars have major commitments during the rest of the year, with Fury set for a re-match with his conquerer Oleksandr Usyk in December.

The duo fought for the world unified heavyweight championship in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in May, with the 'The Cat' prevailing via a split points decision. Meanwhile, Joshua has responded to his back-to-back losses to Usyk in style - putting together a string of four victories in succession including a mesmerizing knockout win over Francis Ngannou in March.

As he looks to continue his purple patch in the ring, he will contest for the IBF heavyweight title against Daniel Dubois in September at London's Wembley Stadium. However, the resurgent Watford-born fighter's promoter Hearn is already setting his sights on finally sealing a deal for his client to face off against compatriot Fury after his upcoming bout.

"We will always kick ourselves if we don’t make Fury v AJ," the outspoken figure told iFL TV as he revealed the feeling within Joshua's camp over the prospect. "There’s no doubt that if Riyadh was around and His Excellency (Alalshkih) was around two years ago, AJ and Fury would’ve happened."

"It hasn’t and now we have two mega fights coming up: AJ against Dubois on September 21 and Fury against Usyk on December 21. If both of those guys (Joshua and Fury) win those fights, you’ve got the biggest fight in the history of the sport by a [...] mile.

Hearn continued: "If they don’t [both] win, you’ve got a mega fight. Imagine if AJ wins the world heavyweight title and Fury loses, Fury can challenge AJ for the title. If Fury wins and AJ loses, AJ can challenge for the world unified title. And if they both lose, they can fight for bragging rights forever.

"So, it’s massive and I don’t want to give people hope but you would think, right now with the way boxing is and the dynamic and strategic approach of His Excellency, that fight will happen next year. But, let’s just beat Dubois on September 21."

Manwhile, Joshua seemed to give the idea his assent when speaking to Queensberry Promotions, saying: "It needs to happen, it’s just taking a long time, it needs to happen. But he’s got his hands full and so have I. Let’s both do our jobs and we’ll see a positive 2025.

"I’m sure of it because we know that the people that are listening want to make good things happen. So potentially we might see Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury enter into a ring in collaboration with Riyadh Season, here in London."

Meanwhile, heavyweight colossus Usyk also admitted that he would be open to completing a trilogy of bouts versus Joshua in the future. Weighing up the prospect, he told the Daily Mail: "I don’t particularly want any rematches, but when I beat Tyson Fury for the second time and when Anthony Joshua beats Daniel Dubois, of course they want to do a third fight."
