Logan Sargeant has punchy response when asked about points failure

Williams picked up their first points of the season in Monaco as Alex Albon finished P9, but Logan Sargeant is still struggling in his second year with the team

Logan Sargeant has lamented not having the same car specification as Alex Albon after his teammate won Williams their first points this season in Monaco. The American regularly runs a different, older spec, which continued to be the case last weekend.

Sargeant, 23, had a heavier, older floor than Albon in Monte Carlo and used the 2023-spec Monaco rear wing. That has been the story of the team's season after struggling with part shortages all year.

The problem infamously led to Sargeant being left without a seat in Australia. That transpired because the team had no spare chassis to replace the one Albon wrecked during FP1.

Williams has avoided repeating that scenario since, but Sargeant is still not receiving the upgrades that Albon benefits from. In Monaco, that included an updated rear wing while the American was left using last season's.

Sargeant highlighted the struggle when speaking after the race. "It was a tricky race and looking at a rear wing was pretty much my day," he said.

"It was uneventful for the most part; I was stuck underneath Fernando (Alonso) and Danny (Ricciardo) for a long time, and it just started to eat away at the tyres, and I really had nothing left.

"The rears completely degraded and from there I was hanging on to the tyres. Once I put the new tyre on and got some clear air, I felt good."

Sargeant continued: "Alex getting points is a boost for the team and shows a bit of what is to come. Going forward, when both cars have the same spec, we’ll both be able to fight for these opportunities more."

Afterwards, Albon also acknowledged the increased performance. "Whilst you’d rather have a slightly more exciting race to win points at, I’m still happy," he said. "P9 for the team and our first points of the season which means a lot to us.

"You never want to be pointless, especially for the team's morality, so hopefully this will be a nice kickstart to the season. We’ve added small amounts of performance to the car so it’s good to see these upgrades working and that we’re able to stay around a similar pace to our direct competitors."

He also conceded that Sargeant not having access to the updated parts hurt his chances. “Obviously it cost him today,” Albon acknowledged regarding the parts. “It would have made a difference.

"I don’t know how far off he was from Q2, but it wouldn’t have been much. It would have been most likely in Q2 (with the new parts)."

Sargeant running an alternative set-up concerns Albon and the team alike, but his teammate is upbeat about them being aligned soon. “It’s something that we want, he said. "The good thing is we will have one ready for Barcelona (in a month).”
