Former F1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve has taken aim at Haas star Kevin Magnussen ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix
Former F1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve has demanded Kevin Magnussen to be banned from the Canadian Grand Prix for his role in a crash with Sergio Perez. Magnussen collided with the Red Bull ace in the first lap in Monaco, causing an end to both of their races before they had the chance to get started.
The incident ignited a fiery debate in the motorsport world, with many feeling the Haas driver should face rectrospective punishment for his role in the ugly crash.
Villeneuve, who won the world championship in 1997, has come down hard on the Danish driver for his role in the incident. Not only did he feel Magnussen was at fault, he also believes the 31-year-old should be banned from the Canadian GP on June 9.

While speaking on behalf of Best Online Poker Sites, Villeneuve said: “If you want to go side by side you have to be side by side, not your front wing near the rear wheels. What is that all about?
"The fact is, Magnussen did not get out of the car and say, ’Oops sorry, I completely messed up.‘ Instead, he suggested it should have been the other way.
"Excuse me? What planet are we living on? The utter lack of comprehension on Magnussen’s part befuddles me. We are in F1 here, not Formula 4 where a 15 year-old might not have that understanding yet.

"And the fact he was not even penalised shows that the system is not neutral. If he had been penalised he would have been banned for one race. They decided not to. Why have the rule in place?
"It was massive. It was dangerous. It was ridiculous. And he was 17th and 18th or something. He was not even going for the lead. Come on. First lap and you cannot even judge that. It is mad."
The FIA declared the crash was nothing more than a racing incident, saving Magnussen from a ban. The Dane has already amassed 10 penalty points on his superlicence within a year. If he collects two more points, he will be banned from a Grand Prix.
Magnussen received several time penalties at the Miami GP which were converted into five penalty points. He has been accused of driving too aggressively in the past few races of 2024 to help team-mate Nico Hulkenberg secure a position in the points.
Despite the tight path he is treading, he did not feel he did anything wrong in Monte Carlo. "From my point of view, I had a good part of my front on Perez's rear and when he went to the wall I got pushed to the wall and made contact with him," Magnussen said. "I trusted he was going to leave space for me since I was there.
"It's not a corner where you're braking into it, it's a bend on the straight so you have to have a car otherwise you leave the other guy no option. From my point of view, I was there, and I got squeezed to the wall."
